FUNCTIONAL FOOD, NUTRACEUTICALS AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

 

FUNCTIONAL FOOD


  • Nutrient consumed as a part of a normal diet but delivering one or more active ingredients (that have physiological effects and may enhance health) within the food matrix.
  • The functional food category and examples are shown as below :


HOW ARE FOODS MADE TO BE "FUNCTIONAL"?

1) Taking out potentially harmful components. For example, cholesterol in egg yolk and lactose in milk.
2) Increasing the amount of nutrients and beneficial non-nutrients. For example, fiber-fortified liquid meals, calcium-, and vitamin C-fortified orange juice.
3) Using beneficial substances in food production or products. For example, using bacteria in fermented milk and soy products.


DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS


  • A product (other than tobacco) that is intended to supplement the diet, which contains one or more of the following dietary ingredients.
  • A vitamin, a mineral, an herb or other botanical, an amino acid, a dietary substance to supplement the diet by increasing the total daily intake, or a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, extract, or combinations of these ingredients
  • Is ingested in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form.
  • Is not represented for use as a conventional food or as the sole item of a meal or diet.
  • Labeled as a ‘dietary supplement.’

PROS AND CONS IN THE USE OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

SHORT TERM

Pros : Feeling good, better and healthy because you are taking care of your health.

: Have a sense of balanced nutrition because you are receiving proper amount of vitamins and minerals.

Cons : The tablet size, quantity, taste, texture, smell is off-putting sometimes.

: The high cost.

: Difficult to get used to take it regularly.

LONG TERM

Pros : You get to received full benefits from the recommended dosage.

: Maybe better functioning digestive system.

: Strong immune immune system.

: Early prevention of diseases.

Cons: Expensive to buy

: Difficult to remember eating them regularly

: Daily unpleasant taste or smell of supplement

NUTRACEUTICALS


  • A diet supplement that delivers a concentrated form of a biologically active component of food in a non- food matrix to enhance health.
  • Nutritional products that provide health and medical benefits including the prevention and treatment of disease. 
The difference between dietary supplements and nutraceuticals is that we use dietary to compensate for what we lack in our diet. It could be vitamins, protein shakes or herbs product. While nutraceuticals is for special medical uses only.
